GETTING THE BUGBUG BUG - BugBugs Rickshaw Depot, London
One of the oldest forms of transport and, until recently, confined to less-developed countries where fuel is a luxury, cycle rickshaws or pedicabs are now a common sight in London and other major cities. The word "rickshaw" originates from the Japanese jinrikisha, which translates to "human-powered vehicle". Despite the fact that typical fares are more expensive, per mile, than taxis, a rickshaw journey is a carbon neutral and guilt free option for Londoners faced with an increasing awareness of climate change.
Chris Smallwood and Neil Adams set up Bugbugs in 1997. The company's ethos is based around a philanthropic ideology. Any money made is used to fund legal proceedings to improve the pedicab industry, or goes towards helping the riders and providing them with this depot space, which is the focal point of Bugbugs' thriving international community of riders.
